2021 Fishing Season Episode 6 - Another Big Columbia King Before Work
In order to spend more time fishing, I was out at least once a week before work at the end of August. Typically I would be on the water at dark and fish for a couple hours before I needed to be at work at 9 a.m. We were still on the Columbia River targeting Fall Kings using spinners and Pro Trolls. The season was shaping up nicely and we were looking forward to some great days. Enjoy!

2021 Fishing Season Episode 5 - First Columbia Fall King Before Work
Переглядів 882 роки тому
By August, we focused our fishing efforts on the Columbia River Fall Kings. The season begins at Buoy 10 by Astoria in early August and the fishing improves as more and more fish move upriver. The season peaks near Portland around early September but the fishing can be good from mid-August to the end of September. We continued using spinners and Pro Trolls but some anglers were using Super bait...
2021 Fishing Season Episode 4 - Evening Spring Salmon Surprise
Переглядів 1562 роки тому
The long early summer evenings offered great weather and fishing for springers on the Willamette was a great way to spend a few hours on the water after work. I was able to get out several times before the heatwave came through and ODFW closed fishing during the afternoon and evening in order to protect the fish. On this trip, I hooked up at the barges and landed a nice Springer on a spinner an...
2021 Fishing Season Episode 3 - Sunday Morning King
Переглядів 912 роки тому
In early June, I was treated to a halibut trip with Don. The trip proved successful and I caught my largest halibut ever. Halibut trips are long days starting early in the morning and often ending late at night. This trip was a little shorter and I decided to catch a good tide turn the next morning. It was a good decision, and I was able to land a nice Springer on a Pro-Troll and spinner. After...
2021 Fishing Season Episode 2 - First King and Good Trouble on the Willamette
Переглядів 1592 роки тому
It took two months of fishing before I landed my first spring salmon for 2021. It was a small King caught on the Willamette River after work. It was likely a jack but I tagged it anyway because I wasn't certain it was 24 inches or smaller. The next week I lost one and landed a nice spring King while fishing with my buddy Zach, who caught his first salmon on the kayak. We were fishing with 360 P...
2021 Fishing Season Episode 1 - Season Preview

What a great 2021 fishing season. Fishing with my buddies Mark, Zach, Philippe, Don, and Kevin, we caught Chinook and Coho salmon, trout, and a halibut. Most of our fishing was on the Columbia and Willamette rivers less than 20 miles from home. We used spinners and Superbaits for most of the salmon and I learned how to jig for Coho at the mouth of the Klickitat River. This was also the season I...

Chinook Salmon Loved and Lost!
Переглядів 1253 роки тому
I hooked and lost more salmon this year than any year before. On one day, I lost two before noon after they both buried the rod - those takes are featured on my 2020 Health Hazard video. Although frustrating, losing a fish is better than not hooking a fish at all. Hopefully, 2021 will be a better season for catching. Go Farther. Catch More!
Columbia River King!
Переглядів 1703 роки тому
After the fires subsided, the air cleared and Mark and I were breathing easier as we continued chasing fall kings. The fall fish are usually larger than the spring fish and run in groups so when the fishing is good it's usually great and when it's bad, sit back and enjoy the boat ride. Mark and I were joined by Philippe who caught his first salmon on the kayak. It was jack, but it was still a k...

Fishing In A Northwest Environmental Disaster!
Переглядів 1723 роки тому
In addition to the pandemic, the Northwest experienced hazardous air quality from the numerous wildfires. Not wanting to miss any days on the Columbia, Mark and I ventured out with masks, tuna, and Superbaits. It was exciting and scary, and rather frustrating missing several solid takes. Hopefully 2021 will give us a break. Go Farther. Catch More.
Steelhead Hoochie Coochie!
Переглядів 1473 роки тому
Transitioning to the Columbia River as the Willamette River season was ending, this beauty was a wonderful surprise and the first steelhead I have caught trolling a Superbait. Making the catch even better was that it was a hatchery fish and ended up on the dinner table. Mark had an equally great day landing a nice king a couple hours later. A great day! Go Farther. Catch More.

    Thanks for the info. May not have been your cart. Mine is a 2017 and has never been on a cart and. I just found the same leak. I suspect in my case water comes in from the top of the black tube and gets between the black tube and the plastic kayak and expands in the winter and cracks it. Just my guess. I’ll try your repair. Thanks for the video, was helpful many years after you made it

    How are you storing your catch or you just letting it hang off the side of your kayak?

    • @KayakFlyAngler
      @KayakFlyAngler 2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching and the question! I always have a kill bag with ice (you can see it at the end of several videos). I fold it in half and store it on the bow. When I catch a fish, it gets unfolded and the fish goes in. Usually, as soon as I net it, I bleed it and go to shore and clean the fish and make sure ice is in the cavity so the fish stays fresh. Salmon are too precious not to carefully care for them when you get one, especially in the summer.

    Cool video. Love NR boats! I know this video is 4 years old now, but I was curious why troll with the main? Where those kings needing a faster presentation?

    • @KayakFlyAngler
      @KayakFlyAngler 2 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment, Chuck! It depends on the ocean currents. If we don't feel we are getting a good presentation, we use the main. In this case, we did not feel the kicker was enough to entice the bite.

    Exactly why most people will miss fish when they have it in their hands . When the fish strikes people most often will pull back as a natural reaction and pull the bait right out of the fishes mouth . He’s doing something right though . He had chances which is better than most .

      Thanks for the comment, Mark! Of course, I am always watching the depth, and when it gets shallow I put the fins flush with the bottom of the kayak. I have bent a fin rod twice and it was easy to bend it back with little damage to the fin or rod. The drive is amazingly durable. See you on the water!
